SUSTAINABILITY
Shipley College became the first college in the world to commit to the SDG Accord - a global movement dedicated to improving our economy, environment and society.
The United Nations established the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 and the SDG Accord was launched by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) in 2017, to highlight the key role that educators must play in meeting global sustainability challenges.
"The future of humanity and indeed all life on Earth now depends on us”
- Sir David Attenborough
LEADERS IN SUSTAINABILITY.
When we became the first college worldwide to sign the EAUC's SDG Accord, Shipley College committed to becoming a flag bearer for the United Nations’ SDG goals - which includes reducing inequalities, promoting good health, wellbeing and education, and tackling issues like poverty and climate change.
We also committed to sharing best practice and reporting progress we make against various measures - you can find out more below.
We are a key part of the West Yorkshire Consortium of Colleges (WYCC) Green Skills project, leading the Green Consortium on the implementation of the SDGs and helping to guide other West Yorkshire colleges in increasing awareness and understanding of the SDGs.
These measures are important to Shipley College. We support a multicultural student cohort, where lots of our learners are from areas that are among the most deprived in the country (Index of Multiple Deprivation), so we seek to ensure everyone is treated fairly, and are devoted to offering equality of opportunity.
We want to serve the Bradford region by promoting economic, environmental and social well being. Our sustainability and environmental policies and procedures demonstrate commitment to this cause, with action plans in place to improve sustainability aims across college.
