The Force is Strong with This One: Showcasing Yorkshire’s Space Industry
In partnership with Space Hub Yorkshire, the UK Space Agency-funded regional space cluster, Shipley College students are producing a series of promotional videos highlighting the cutting-edge space technology emerging from the region. The series, titled "Space Hub Yorkshire’s Guide to the Galaxy," features local companies such as Radio Design and Slipstream Design, both based in Shipley.
The students also secured an exclusive interview with Professor Ifiok Otung, a global authority in satellite communications and Professor of Space Engineering at the Bradford-Renduchintala Centre for Space AI at the University of Bradford. Their completed videos will launch in June and be showcased at space conferences across the UK and beyond—a truly stellar opportunity for the students involved.
Glenn McCauley, Board Member for Space Hub Yorkshire, said:
"The entire Space Hub Yorkshire team has been blown away by the quality of the materials produced by the students, as well as their professionalism and attention to detail. They are a real credit to Shipley College. We have had fantastic feedback from our partners, and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend Shipley College’s Creative Media students to any business. I wish them all the best in their future creative careers."
For the students, the project has been an eye-opening experience, as they explored the intersection of media, technology, and space innovation.
Sanjia Sivakumar, a Creative Media student at Shipley College, said:
"I never thought I’d be involved in the space race—I was just really interested in what they were talking about. It was very intriguing and very technical! Shipley College has opened up loads of opportunities for me, especially this filming we’ve been doing for Space Hub Yorkshire. This looks great on my CV because I think companies will want to work with someone who has experience like I have got."
The videos are available to view on the Yorkshire Space Hub website.
Supporting the Rebel Alliance (AKA Yorkshire’s Community Sector)
Beyond space, Shipley College’s media students are using their creative talents to support local businesses and organisations, including the social care and arts sectors.
In a continued partnership with Care Dynamics Yorkshire, students are producing heartfelt video content that tells the stories of people who rely on exceptional care services. Their projects include a "Day in the Life" video capturing the experiences of a care client, a committee meeting film that gathers vital customer feedback, and an engaging introduction to Care Dynamics’ new office space.
Carlo Moorhouse, Head of Care & Support at Care Dynamics, said:
"We are thrilled to continue our collaboration with Shipley College. The students bring an incredible level of enthusiasm, creativity, and professionalism to every project. Their contributions help us achieve our mission of innovation, customer engagement, and community empowerment."
Meanwhile, students are also championing sustainability through the arts. In partnership with Photo Hub North, they are developing a campaign to promote the "Creative Earth: Eco Photo & Arts Festival", a pilot festival designed to inspire environmental awareness through photography and the arts.
Lisa Holmes, Founder of Photo Hub North, said:
"It’s been a joy working with Shipley College students. They bring fresh ideas and energy to the project, helping us engage with the community in new and exciting ways. Photography is such a powerful tool for expression, and I believe their work will be an invaluable part of this festival."
These Are the Students You’re Looking For – Industry-Ready and Future-Focused
From space exploration to community care and sustainability, Shipley College students are proving themselves to be creative, capable, and ready to take on real-world industry challenges. Their success has paved the way for even bigger opportunities, including the launch of the T Level in Media Broadcast Production, a cutting-edge programme designed to prepare students for careers in the dynamic media sector.
The T Level builds on the college’s strong industry partnerships, providing students with practical experience alongside academic studies.
A representative from the Shipley College Media team said:
"These incredible projects have accelerated our students' growth in ways we couldn’t have imagined. Working with real clients has given them hands-on experience, boosting their confidence and skills. The work they have produced has not only met expectations—it has exceeded them. We are incredibly proud of what they have achieved and can’t wait to welcome the next cohort of students onto our T Level course."
