Shipley College Horticulture Students Katie Rushworth (2)

It was great to welcome Katie Rushworth, Star of ITV’s Love Your Garden, back to college!

Katie is one of our former students, having started her Horticulture journey doing City & Guilds qualifications for three years in evening classes with us.

"My time at Shipley College made a huge difference, really cemented my learning and helped transition into my new career."

After qualifying she then went on to study a Garden Design degree, during which she was informed of an opportunity to apply to be a gardening TV presenter. She applied on the Sunday, and had an audition on Monday.

"Essentially I had to walk around a garden and explain to the production team how I would improve it. Then I had to give a masterclass - I chose Alpine - and they told me quite quickly that I had got the job. It was only after that I was told it was for a primetime ITV show with Alan Titchmarsh!"

She kindly came in to speak to our current Horticulture students as part of World of Work Week, talking about her TV career, her work as an author, and her garden consultancy business.

Katie also gave our students advice on what direction they could take after a Horticulture course or apprenticeship, gave business start up ideas and lots of interesting, practical Horticulture advice which later featured as a social media series for the College.
