HOUSE OF LORDS ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE COMMITTEE VISITS COLLEGE
Shipley College received a visit from a hereditary peer last week: John Francis Russell, 7th Earl Russell, grandson of mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Russell, and great-grandson of John Russell, the Victorian prime minister.
The current Earl Russell, who is a member of the House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee (ECCC), visited the College as part of the House of Lords Youth Engagement Programme.
Shipley College was one of six schools and colleges chosen from a nationwide application process to participate in the programme.
Students asked him about environmental policies, renewable energy, and youth involvement in politics.
College Skills Coach Esther Moir said: "Earl Russell shared some really detailed answers, and reminded everyone how important it is to think critically."
Earl Russell also explained the work of the ECCC, and the House of Lords' role in legislation and government accountability.
During the visit, Earl Russell heard from the students about the environment and climate change issues they are passionate about. He also talked to them about the work of the committee and the wider role the House of Lords has in the passing of laws.
Travel and Tourism students also gave Earl Russell a tour of the College, including our new 4D immersive rooms and business boardroom .
