SUPPORTED INTERNSHIPS
WHAT IS A SUPPORTED INTERNSHIP?
Supported Internships are effectively an opportunity for young people with additional needs to get into work. They are structured study programs within a local business, which are free to the employer, and where the young person (the intern), and the local business, are fully supported throughout by a support worker.
WHY TAKE ON A SUPPORTED INTERN?
Being given the opportunity of an Internship can be absolutely life-changing for our interns, and many of the employers we work in partnership with have reported that taking on an intern has been great for their business and their employees.
The intern must carry out work that is useful and impactful to the business, and the exact nature of this will differ for each internship - so this will be tailored
on both sides.

“WE LOVE HEARING FROM CUSTOMERS ABOUT THE GREAT SERVICE PROVIDED BY OUR COLLEAGUES - LIKE MACAULEY WHO WORKS IN OUR SHIPLEY STORE.”
Macauley, who has Cerebral Palsy, started at the store on work placement from Shipley College before joining the team last year. Customer Trading Manager Lisa said: ‘He’s an absolute joy to work with. He smiles all the time and he’s the most polite young man I’ve ever met in my life. Customers will queue to be served by him and we’ve seen Facebook posts and Twitter messages praising him. He’s had so many difficulties in his life but nothing’s ever too much trouble. He’s amazing!’
