Student Life

COLLEGE LIFE – Resources, Facilities & Clubs

It’s not all about study... Your time at Shipley College is also about what you do outside of the classroom. You can get involved in social events, trips, fundraising, volunteering and hobbies. We have lots of clubs and sporting activities both inside and outside of College. You may even want to join our Student Council. Get involved and make the most of College life!

Our Bite-size Student Guide 16/17 gives you a snapshot of everything you need to know as a student here at Shipley College, from getting financial support to careers information.

We have areas where you can meet up with friends for a chat, chill out and relax in all our main buildings. In our Exhibition Hall and Salt Rock Cafe, there are food and drink outlets and Costa Coffee on sale. In the Jonathan Silver Building, there are hot drinks and food available in a student run cafe. As our campus is based in the centre of Saltaire village, we also have some great places on the doorstep. You can go to Roberts Park to relax, explore Salts Mill and take advantage of all the cafes and shops in the area.

If you are a student or an apprentice you are eligible to buy an NUS card for approx £12-£15. With the card you will be able to take advantage of student discounts offered in a variety of different places including restaurants, high street stores, supermarkets and UK attractions. To find out more, visit NUS. (Link to

Any student can access the free gym based in Victoria Hall where you can use a fantastic range of fitness equipment. Following an induction to ensure you know how to use equipment safely, you are good to go, whether you want to build muscle or tone up or just get a bit fitter!

You can take  part in a great range of activities:

  • Organise and promote events.

  • Fundraise for local and national charities and organisations and claim a nationally recognised certificate through vInspired.

  • Complete voluntary work as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

  • Take part in the National Citizenship Service or NCS as it’s more commonly known.

  • Gain valuable experience, rewards and even additional qualifications within the College working with local agencies and service providers.

The opportunities on offer change regularly depending on demand.  Details of current activities are available on the Enrichment Notice boards, Twitter, the student portal and the plasma screens around college.
